2009 AFOEM Demographics Study |
 |
Paging ALL Doctors, you are required in the Survey Room!
Thank you to all those who have already participated in the online survey. We are now sitting right on 50%. Our target is 70%! Due to this, we have decided to extend the closing date for the final time. Don't miss out on your chance to not only win one of three copies of LaDou's book but also make a positive impact to the direction of the Faculty.
The aim of this study is to provide precise information on the Fellows and Trainees that make up the Faculty. This information will help provide insight into the current state of the Faculty, the future direction and the training needs of the Faculty. The 2009 AFOEM Demographics Study is different from the previous RACP survey, in that we have designed it to focus specifically on the needs of our Faculty’s Fellows and Trainees.
The responses to this study will be anonymous.Fellows and Trainees who complete the 2009 AFOEM Demographics Study will go into a draw for a chance to win one of three copies of Joseph LaDou's "Current Occupational And Environmental Medicine: Fourth Ed" - as long as an 70% response rate has been achieved.

Two-Day Professional Development Course |
 |
Dignity
The Medical Humanities program at the University of Sydney is offering a two day professional development course exploring human dignity in health care.
Dignity is usually regarded as being a core human value in medicine, with patients finding loss of dignity one of the most challenging aspects of the experience of critical illness. This course explores the sensory, embodied, conceptual, and ethical components of dignity through expert-led conversations, academic research and the creative arts. Participants will be encouraged to challenge and share their ideas and experiences about dignity in health care with their peers.
Questions covered include:
- What are the facets and attributes of dignity? How does it feel and how is it recognised?
- What issues respecting dignity arise in the practitioner-patient relationship? How should these be addressed?
- Why does dignity matter?
- What are the clinical implications of dignity and its loss?
- How can we use the humanities and creative arts to further understand dignity in health care?
The course will meet for two days, Thursday 30 April (9-5PM), Friday 1 May (9-5PM) in the Darlington Centre Board Room on the main campus of the University of Sydney.
For more information and registration form, please contact Dr Claire Hooker: claireh@med.usyd.edu.au or 0430 116 117.

RACP Policy & Advocacy Update |
 |
National Code of Conduct
The final draft of the Code of Conduct for Doctors in Australia has been released.
This draft of the code reflects feedback from the extensive, national consultation process with the medical profession and the community conducted during 2008. As a result of the consultation process, we are confident the code now defines the standards of practice that doctors and the community generally agree are reasonable for doctors to uphold.
The College has an opportunity to make a submission regarding the draft code. Please forward you comments to Yvonne.Luxford@racp.edu.au by Friday, May 8th.
Media Training at Physicians Week
The College will be holding a half day media training session on Sunday, 17 May 2009 from 9am at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre.
This session will increase participants' understanding of how the media works and how messages need to be delivered. This grounding in media relations will be reinforced by mock interviews with feedback on techniques, messaging and what parts of the interview a journalist might cover. Fellows and Trainees will receive a detailed workbook covering the content of the presentation.
The cost will be $550 per participant - and morning tea is included!
For further information or to express an interest in attending this training session, please contact Yvonne Luxford at the RACP on Ph: + 61 2 9256 9604 or via email Yvonne.Luxford@racp.edu.au
