Letter From The Editor-in-Chief

Fret not. You have not been struck off the newsletter subscription list. It has been quite a while since the last one and I blame it all on MasterChef!

Today we formally welcome seven new Fellows to the Faculty:

  • Scott Adams (NZ);
  • Ben Cheesman (NZ);
  • Andrew James (VIC);
  • Margaret Macky (NZ);
  • Nathan Pastor (VIC);
  • Arthur Stratigopoulos (VIC) and;
  • Danh Tran (QLD)

A big special thanks to their Supervisors and Regional Directors of Training for their ongoing guidance and support through the years.

While the monkey has been away watching re-runs of Days of Our Lives and MasterChef (bad monkey!), results of the recent RACP Elections have been finalised and published. You may view the full election results here. We'd like to congratulate the following people on their appointments:

  • Gavin Ballenden (AFOEM Councillor, QLD Rep)
  • James Ross (AFOEM President-Elect & AFOEM Councillor, ACT Rep)
  • Robert Gillet (AFOEM Councillor, WA Rep)

That's enough from me now. See you next time!

Coal Services Virtual Reality Training Day

This Is An Opportunity Not To Be Missed

There's only a few weeks left till our Coal Services Virtual Reality Training Course (Friday 21, May 2010). As registrations for this event has been slower than anticipated, we will be closing registrations mid-next week (05/04/10). We are in need of at least eight more trainees.

Both David Goddard and Murray Sinclair have put huge efforts into this training day. Any trainee intending to sit for the exams will no doubt benefit from the experience. The day has been structured to tie in with the AFOEM Curriculum. It'll be a great shame to have to postpone the event.

If you haven't already done so, please submit your registration before Wednesday 5, May 2010. For those who have already registered, thank you. A confirmation email with venue location will be emailed to you shortly.

New Arrangements For Medical Registrations

Effective From Thursday 1 July 2010

It is very important that you ensure that you are currently registered with the medical board in the state or territory in which you practise. This will ensure that you transition smoothly into the national scheme and are registered with the Medical Board of Australia. It is also important that you check that your contact details and mailing address with the current state or territory Board are correct.

Towards the end of April 2010, or early May, every medical practitioner will receive a letter from the Medical Board of Australia. This letter will list your registration details as currently recorded by the medical board in the state or territory in which you are registered and your proposed registration type under the National Law that will apply after 1 July 2010. The letter from the Medical Board of Australia will also give information about your obligations under the national law.

It is essential that you take the time to check the accuracy of the information in the letter and promptly provide feedback to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), the Agency that is supporting the Board, if something is not correct.

Doctors who are registered in multiple jurisdictions may receive more than one letter, although data cleansing and de-duplication work is being undertaken to reduce the likelihood of this occurring.

A feedback form will be enclosed with the letter which needs to go back to AHPRA if corrections are required or more than one letter is received.

All doctors who are registered on 30 June 2010 will be automatically registered in the national scheme until the end date of their current registration. Annual registration renewal for doctors with general registration with the Medical Board of Australia will be 30 September, regardless of the state or territory in which you practise. If you are due to renew your registration between now and 30 June 2010, your registration will be valid until the end date. The next time you renew in 2011 will be with the Medical Board of Australia and will be for a period that brings you in line with the 30 September registration renewal date for all medical practitioners.

Different renewal timelines apply to International Medical Graduates with conditional or limited registration and interns.

Further information is available on the Medical Board of Australia website which is accessible via www.ahpra.gov.au or directly at www.medicalboard.gov.au.
