AFOEM Position Statement Launch |
 |
Work? Fun? What?
The faculty launched its Position Statement ‘Realising the Health Benefits of Work’ at the Sofitel Wentworth in Sydney on 18 May. We also released the ‘Helping People to Return to Work – using evidence for better outcomes’ at the same time.

Professor Sir Mansel Aylward delivered the keynote address and provided an excellent background into the drivers for change in the UK and the current initiatives, all of which resonant strongly for us in Australasia. The launch was well attended by a range of healthcare professionals, industry, unions and insurers. Both Mary Wyatt and Robin Chase were delighted with the positive response to the position statement but importantly the overwhelming desire by key stakeholders to become actively involved in the next steps on the path to implementing the recommendations in the position statement.
Our second launch is next week – The Langham Hotel Auckland 1:00pm -4:30pm.
For further details contact:
Follow up communication to all faculty members and stakeholders will take place after the Auckland launch. We will include a link to Sir Mansel’s presentation from the faculty website, as well as the next steps and how individuals and organisations can get involved. Below is a link to an interview that Mary Wyatt did with 2GB this week promoting the Health Benefits of Work.

As a footnote to the Sydney launch, Mary and Robin were standing outside the Sofitel after the launch discussing the next steps for the Position Statement when the Treasurer Wayne Swann walks past and into the hotel. Quick as a flash, Mary had provided the Treasurer with a copy of the Position Statement and a 30 second sales pitch on how Realising the health benefits of work and helping people to return to work will save the government significant $s. As they say’ Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity!!
We're On Talk-Back Radio!
On Monday 17, May 2010, our very own AFOEM Policy & Advocacy Chair, Dr Mary Wyatt, was featured on 2GB on the Faculty's position statment 'Realising the Health Benefits of Work'.

Development Of A Quality Framework For The Medicare Benefits Schedule - Discussion Paper
The discussion paper is available at http://www.health.gov.au/mbrtg. The paper was developed to provide background information on the development of the Quality Framework, provide updates on progress and, where appropriate, provide access to consultant reports commissioned for the Quality Framework. The primary function for the MBS Quality Framework is to strengthen the listing, pricing and review processes that underpin the MBS by ensuring that services are aligned with contemporary clinical evidence, represent best value for money and improve health outcomes for patients.
Please provide comment to mary.osborn@racp.edu.au.
