Still Wanted: Missing Issues of The Australian Women's Weekly

Still Wanted: Missing Issues of The Australian Women's Weekly

The Library is still on the hunt for missing copies of The Australian Women's Weekly. We are digitising issues of this much-loved magazine, from 1933 to 1982, and we need your help to fill some gaps.

Since the project began in mid-2009, the response from the public has been overwhelming. Of the 400+ missing issues, 110 have been donated to the Library. These issues have been found in the most obscure places - under carpet and floorboards, behind picture frames and in boxes in attics and sheds.

If you have any issues that are on our missing issues list and you would like to donate them to the Library, please call
1800 059 097 (freecall).

Despatches from Gallipoli on Trove

Despatches from Gallipoli on Trove

Australians first learned of the Gallipoli campaign from the news reports of war correspondents. Charles Bean, from The Sydney Morning Herald, was Australia's first official war correspondent for the Australian Imperial Force.

Here are links to two of the many examples
of his reports that you can find in Trove:

You will notice the first article has been text-corrected. As the conversion from old newspaper images into digital text is not always accurate, over 5000 online users are helping by correcting the text.

The second article is yet to be corrected. Perhaps you would like to help us?

Treasure of the Month

Treasure of the Month

When war broke out in August 1914, thousands of young Australian men rushed to join the Australian Imperial Force. In the face of the disastrous Gallipoli campaign (1915-1916), in which over 8 000 Australians died, maintaining enthusiasm was taken on by music publishers Dinsdales of Swanston Street, Melbourne.

This rousing song for voice and piano was one of Dinsdales’ numerous ‘patriotic songs’ in 1916. It tells the story of a boy with a passion for war games. He is proud of his father, serving at Gallipoli, and wants to be a soldier too.

In 2010, the Library will begin construction on the state-of-the-art Treasures Gallery.
If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to the Treasures Gallery, please contact the Development Office

on 02 6262 1141 or development@nla.gov.au.
