Our new Tuesdays in the Galleries is proving to be extremely popular! Meet friends for a drink after work, and come and enjoy the free events. The bar opens at 5pm. We've got a great line-up of events this month, including a nostalgic trip to the markets with City Historian Lisa Murray (13 Sept); the launch of Ampersand mag (issue 4) hosted by Jennifer Byrne (ABC's First Tuesday Book Club) (20 Sept); and an online shopping experience with Corban & Blair and Opus Design (27 Sept).

Art and About: On Sale! Design After Dusk market

Enjoy the Art and About Friday Night Live celebrations in Martin Place and then head to the Library for a unique shopping experience. Shop for art, homewares and gifts from emerging artists and designers at the Design After Dusk market in the Library's Galleries. While you're there, why not check out our latest exhibition, On Sale! Shops & Shopping? State Library Galleries, Friday 23 September, 5pm to midnight

On Sale! Shops & Shopping - on show until 30 October, State Library Galleries
Every woman deserves a washing machine! Find out why in this quirky exhibition jam-packed with amazing goodies to browse. Shopping junkies will love the three-metre mountain of vintage-wrapped mail order parcels, a 1950s style Simpson washing machine and one gallery is ‘wall-papered’ entirely with paper carry bags!
The Library Shop is stocked with beautiful vintage-style gifts inspired by the exhibition. Be the first person to email us with the name of one of the paper carry bags featured in the exhibition and you'll win an On Sale! gift pack. Only the winner will be notified.

Library news

  • This week we welcomed our new State Librarian, Alex Byrne. A profile piece on Alex was recently featured in the Sydney Morning Herald's Spectrum.
  • Our new-look State Reference Library is opening on Monday 19 September. Visit our Renovation blog and facebook to see the fantastic progress made to date. A stunning feature is the newly exposed atrium on the northern side of LG2, which is sure to become a favourite place to study. 
  • Glamorous crime writer Tara Moss was in the Library this week interviewing international bestseller and Prime Suspect creator, Lynda La Plante, for Foxtel's 13th Street. Look out for the program in November.
