New Communications Procedure

Improving the flow of information to Fellows and Trainees is critical to the effective and efficient running of the Faculty. One method of improving the flow of information is to communicate information from committee meetings to faculty membership. At the AFOEM Council meeting of 28 November 2008 it was agreed to communicate information from committees to the faculty. The following procedure outlines what will be communicated, how it will be communicated, and to whom.

History of Medicine Library Lecture Series

The History of Medicine Lecture Series begins this year on March 9 with  Professor Cate Storey of Royal North Shore Hospital speaking on Phrenology.

“AN ELDORADO OF QUACKERY” – THE PRACTICE OF PHRENOLOGY IN NEW SOUTH WALES

Phrenology, introduced to Europe by Franz Gall in the early 19th century, enjoyed both popularity and notoriety in medical and lay communities. This "science of the mind" proposed that one's moral and intellectual capacities could be determined by bumps on the skull.

In some circles phrenology became influential on the concepts of criminology, ethnology and anthropology. In this lecture the practice of Phrenology in New South Wales will be traced from its influence on management of the criminal and the insane, to lingering effects on vocational guidance practices in the 20th century.

The lecture will be held at 6.30pm at the Education Centre, Level 8, 52 Phillip Street Sydney. Wine and cheese will accompany discussion afterwards. Entry is $10 and bookings are essential on (02) 9256 5413 or Liz.Rouse@racp.edu.au

Event

Technology in Medicine Roadshow
Microsoft Theatre, Microsoft Pty Ltd, 1 Epping Road, North Ryde, NSW

  • Free parking is available underneath the venue
  • When: Thursday 12th March 2009-02-06
  • Time: 11.30am-2pm
  • Website: www.advantech.net.au

For the moment the speakers are:

Dr. George Margelis
Transforming healthcare using technology is more than just plugging computers in to hospitals. Technology that facilitates clinical workflow is essential to ensure effective uptake. Intel Digital Health Group has been researching this area for almost a decade. The Mobile Clinical Assistant platform, based on this  research, is designed to combine the best features of modern information technology and the requirements of clinicians. George will discuss the research leading up to the development of the MCA and the results of trials from around the world showing its benefits.

Tim Schroder
Tim will present on Microsoft's strategy of specialised operating systems for specialised tasks. Depending on the task and the needs of the device, Microsoft makes a range of operating systems fully componentised to allow our hardware partners to build focused products, whether it be portable ultrasound, hospital in-ward computing, or test and measure.

Brad Waters
Introducing the new MICA-101 Mobile Clinical Assistant and demonstrating several applications where the MICA-101 can assist in improving clinical workflow within a medical environment.

The event is sponsored by Advantech, Microsoft Windows Embedded and Intel Digital Health and is targeted towards both medical/health professionals and medical OEMs and system integrators. We would highly recommend that everyone looking to streamline clinical workflow and improve patient care attend the free medical Roadshow.

In addition to the new MICA-101 Mobile Clinical Assistant, Advantech will have a range of their medical grade Point-Of-Care terminals, Mini-PC systems and Patient Infotainment Terminals on display.
