Australia Day 2007

Sydney turned on a classic summer day for the hundreds of thousands of people who attended Australia Day celebrations across the state.

Over 400,000 people visited events in the CBD, Sydney Harbour and along vantage points on the foreshore. And over 3,500 people across the state took Citizenship on Australia Day.

Arrive Alive Motor Accidents Authority Summer Down Under Oz Day 10K men's race was won by Kurt Fearnley in 20:32min and the women's race was won by Chantal Petitclerc in 25:03.

Ferrython was won by AAMI (Sirius) and the Tall Ships Race was won by Duyfken.

Hyde Park North was bursting at the seams as people enjoyed the Garden Bar and triple j Hottest 100 countdown. 

The NRMA Motorfest along Macquarie and College Streets were awash with car enthusiasts.

While Sydney Harbour brimmed with boats, paddlers and vessels of all sorts.

Once again the Australia Day Ambassador Program, proudly presented by Woolworths, saw more than 170 high achieving and inspirational Australians giving up their time to visit local and regional communities right across NSW to share in their hospitality and celebrations.

In a moving start to the day, Indigenous artists performed a spiritual tribute to the traditional land and sea rights at the Woggan-ma-gule Morning Ceremony, set in the lush surrounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens.

2007 Surfboard Challenge Results

The annual Australia Day Surfboard Challenge presented by TAB kicked off the action on the Harbour. Seven time world champion and event patron, Layne Beachley led the charge from the Sydney Opera House to Blues Point Reserve with a record of field of 700 paddlers including more than 170 nippers who paid tribute to the Year of the Surf Lifesaver.

Winners were as follows:

Women - 3.5 km
1st - Johanna Way - 27:47min
2nd - Jocelyn Kempe - 27:48min
3rd - Hayle Bateup - 28:10min

Men - 3.5km
1st - Trent Martin - 25:11min
2nd - Dean Simpson - 25:16min
3rd - Cameron Pyett - 26:31min
