From the manager's desk...

Welcome to May – a month of cooler weather and Mother’s Day!

Coming hot on the heels of a busy Easter period for tourism in Wollongong and a fabulous period of international exposure in Ferrari/Shell's latest television advertising, we’re expecting that many roads will lead to the region on May 13 as local and visiting families choose to give mums a break by going for a drive along Grand Pacific Drive!

I recently spoke about the China market at the ATEC Symposium, a peak tourism export event for the trade. There I also met with key inbound operators to further increase awareness of Grand Pacific Drive.

Meanwhile, new hotel developments are progressing and expected to add to the city's room stock. Peppers, Best Western and Medina are all underway and the recent Crowne Plaza announcment to develop in Wollongong. . . which will all greatly assist in further increasing the growth of business and leisure tourism in the city.

 Until next month,
Greg Binskin
General Manager

Ferrari showcases Sea Cliff Bridge and Wollongong

Ferrari showcases Sea Cliff Bridge and Wollongong

All roads lead to Wollongong this autumn – well, at least they do on the latest Ferrari/Shell television commercial!

Grand Pacific Drive and Sea Cliff Bridge – which have already starred in TV ads for Honda and Toyota, plus a Korean drama series - are featured on the two-minute ad, which celebrates 60 years of collaboration between the two companies.

That puts Wollongong into the league of the great cities London, New York, Rio, Hong Kong, Monte Carlo and Rome in a global TV advertising campaign and features a 1967 Formula 1 Ferrari 312 zooming through the S-curves on the 15-month-old Sea Cliff Bridge.

The commercial took more than a month to shoot and shows a series of historic Ferrari racing cars roaring through famous city streets.

Asian agents; media take in region

Asian agents; media take in region

April was a busy month for famils, with agents from Korea and Singapore, and media from China, Korea and Malaysia visiting the region.

Thanks to all operators who participated and helped us ensure our visitors experienced the very best the region has to offer our overseas visitors. The feedback that we have received from the media and agents has been extremely encouraging and indicate that we are offering experiences that the markets are seeking.

Illawarra Tourism and Tourism NSW will combine to host a Destination Development Program in early June.

To take the form of a one-day workshop, the event will look at the Illawarra region’s image and discuss the best ways the two organisations can better target our different market segments. Watch this space for more information.

Large Illawarra delegation to ATE

Large Illawarra delegation to ATE

Tourism Wollongong representatives Greg Binskin and Kate Dombkins will represent the Illawarra region at the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) later this month.

Some of the regional operators will also attend Australia’s premier tourism trade event, which will boost the Illawarra representation, plus give them greater insight into the international tourism marketplace.

ATE, known as the largest international trade event in the southern hemisphere, with over 600 overseas buyers, will run for a week at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 26.

Success at recent consumer shows!

Success at recent consumer shows!

Awareness of Grand Pacific Drive is increasing in the camping market, if the response to the Melbourne and Sydney caravan and camping shows is any indication.

Tourism Wollongong had a presence at both these consumer shows, with a very positive response to Grand Pacific Drive from patrons.
