Art and Craft of Presenting - Series 2

Art and Craft of Presenting - Series 2

As you may recall, in the first excerpt we looked at some preliminary ideas about why there was both art and craft in presenting and established the metaphor of the Athlete Presenter.

In the second excerpt we do a little more preliminary thinking and groundwork leading up to first step in the Athlete Presenter process: Get Organised.

Consider for a moment the great presenters and communicators of history such as Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Ghandi, Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy, Tony Blair, Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela. What value can you put on their ability to communicate, to persuade, to influence and ultimately to change the lives of many people for the better? Closer to home, you may be able to identify people in your own personal history who have been able to positively impact on you and those around you. Think about using what worked in their communication skills to change the way people think, feel and behave. Quote for 1 September 2009

Nothing in the world will take the place of persistence. Talent will not; noting is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.  Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.  Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.  Persistence and determiination alone are omnipotent.  Calvin Coolidge

Read more about Calvin Coolidge. Both his dry Yankee wit and his frugality with words became legendary.

Presentation Tip for September 2009

many a fine presentation has been ruined by poor handling of questions raised by the audience aftewards.  Learn to deal with difficult and awkward questions raised by  the audience during your preparation and you will hand anything you are asked with confidence.

Practice answering some impromptu questions put to you by a colleague.

Remain calm, whatever the tone or intention of the questioner.

Divert hostile questions back to the questioner or the audience

Say "Good point !" to encuorage a quesitoner who is shy or nervous.

Answer questions to the whole audience not just the questioner

Take care not to patronise your audience

Win over your audience with your knowledge

Prepare one or two lengthy answers in advance for questions you are sure will be raised.

If you have a specific question regarding questions during or after presentations please don't hesitate to FREECALL Andrew Inglis on 1800 02 997 at anytime. He is more than happy to discuss specific presentations or questions.
