Retirements and Farewells

The Library's Director-General, Jan Fullerton, has announced her retirement after 11 years in the job - and a total of 43 years at the Library.

The Library has also farewelled Sir James Gobbo, who has been Chair of the Library Council since 2001.

Under their leadership, the Library has cemented its reputation as one of the world's leading collecting institutions.

Hear Jan Fullerton reminisce on four decades working at the Library in an interview with ABC Radio.

20-Millionth Article Digitised

20-Millionth Article Digitised

The 20-millionth article has just been digitised by the Library. It was an article from The Mercury newspaper in Tasmania, published on 5 February 1949.

It is a milestone for the Library’s Australian Newspaper Digitisation Program, marking the halfway point to the 40 million articles – from more than 4 million newspaper pages – that the Library is digitising and making freely available for everyone to access.

The Australian Newspaper Digitisation Program is due for completion in July 2011.

Library Acquires the Marcie Muir Collection

Library Acquires the Marcie Muir Collection

The Library has acquired the vast collection of Marcie Muir, the Australian bibliographer and champion of children’s literature.

The collection was acquired from Muir’s family who wanted the 7600 items to stay together after her death in 2007. They were the result of her lifelong passion – to track down and record every children’s book written by an Australian or about Australia.

To celebrate this acquisition, the Friends of the National Library are holding a 'White Gloves' evening to view a selection of treasures from the collection.

Friday 25 June, 6 pm
Visitor Centre, $20 Friends/$30 non-members (includes light refreshments)

Treasure of the Month

Treasure of the Month

Logbook of the Southern Cross,
trans-Pacific flight in 1928

Full of emotion and detail, Charles Ulm’s (1898-1934) logbook gives a minute-by-minute account of how he experienced the first trans-Pacific flight, from Oakland, California to Brisbane, Sydney and later Melbourne in the Southern Cross in mid-1928. Ulm, Charles Kingsford Smith and two Americans took about 84 hours' flying time to complete this historic flight. After their arrival in Australia, Ulm wrote in the logbook: ‘It's hard to realize it's over and that at the moment we are exceedingly famous’.
