Welcome to the October eNEWS.

Rare Photo Uncovered at the Library
A small, brown photograph recently uncovered at the Library has been confirmed as the world's only known vintage print of the arrival of Roald Amundsen's 1911 expedition at the South Pole.
The vintage print was brought to light when a Google search led the Curator of the Pictures Collection at the National Library of Norway, Harald Ostgaard Lund, to the National Library of Australia's collection.
An iconic image in Norway, it is expected to go on loan to Norway in 2011 for a special exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of Amundsen's arrival at the South Pole.
The image can be viewed online.

Amazing Women at the Library
A crowd of literary-lovers were charmed by Thérèse Rein, author Kate Grenville and journalist Geraldine Doogue at the recent Amazing Women event held at the Library.
A celebration of prominent women and their contributions to cultural and intellectual life, each woman spoke about their passion for books.
And which books have inspired these amazing women? For Geraldine Doogue it was A.S. Byatt's Possession, whereas Kate Grenville spoke of her love for the children's classic Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. And it seems Thérèse Rein is a hopeless romantic, citing the Jane Austen classic, Pride and Prejudice.

More photos from the night are available on the Library's Facebook page.

Treasure of the Month
Patchwork quilt worked by Aboriginal children in Western Australia c. 1845
This quilt, sewn by Aboriginal children, was donated to the Library in 1959. The children who made this quilt were taught sewing by Elizabeth Irwin in the earliest days of the Swan River settlement.
Sewn in the medallion style, this quilt is a very early example of needlework by Indigenous children and provides tangible evidence of the early exposure of Aboriginal children to European culture.
In 2010, the National Library will begin construction on a state-of-the-art Treasures Gallery. If you would like to make a donation to the Treasures Gallery, please contact the Development Office on 02 6262 1141 or development@nla.gov.au.
