The Tuckometer Report

The final day of what has been a wonderful AJC Autumn Carnival comes to a conclusion this Saturday with 4 Group 1 races set down for decision supported by 4 additional "Black Type" races.

The 144th renewal of the Sydney Cup should be one of the best in recent memory. All three placegetters from the BMW being Littorio, previous cup winner No Wine No Song and Auckland Cup winner Zavite are expected to take their place in the field together with 2009 Sydney Cup runner up Divine Rebel and Chairman's Handicap winner Jessicabeel. Cups King Bart Cummings could have 2 starters in the race with Moatize racing well at Randwick last Saturday in the JRA Plate and early cup favourite Precedence looking to bounce back after his unplaced effort in the Chairman's Handicap.

The Queen Elizabeth Stakes is always one of the best races of the carnival and Doncaster winner Rangirangdoo will attempt to make it consecutive feature race wins at Royal Randwick but will face strong opposition from Three Year Old Monaco Consul who won the Spring Champion Stakes over this distance at Randwick in addition to his third placing in the Derby. Road To Rock will also attempt to reverse the placing's from the Doncaster finish whilst the Lee Freedman stable will produce another imported galloper in Doctor Fremantle and New Zealand visitor Vosne Romanee with three Group 1 wins already this season is also well in the mix.

The All Aged Stakes will also have an outstanding field with Melito, Hot Danish and Mic Mac set to renew their rivalry from the T J Smith Stakes. Other nominations for the race include Alverta, 2009 winner Danleigh and Metal Bender who continues his comeback from injury.

The Champagne Stakes for the Two Year Olds has 21 nominations including Yosei and Skilled who provided us with a thrilling finish in the Sires Produce Stakes, Beneteau, The Ruffian, who was runner up in the South Australian Sires Produce Stakes and Kudakulari and Lion Tamer both winners last Saturday at Randwick and Ellerslie respectively.

The remaining events on the programme are the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes for Fillies and Mares, Group 3 Frank Packer Plate for Three Year Olds, and the Listed James H B Carr Stakes and Hall Mark Stakes so with the forecast of continued fine weather we look forward to another great day of racing.

Shayne Montgomery's Horses to Follow

Shayne Montgomery's Horses to Follow

READY MISS had impressed harsh judges at the barrier trials before she resumed from her spell at Canterbury last Wednesday (14/4). At the midweek fixture, she very much looked the part when realistically, she was never in danger of defeat after making her own luck, up on the pace. She is trained here at Royal Randwick by John O’Shea and we might expect this filly to cope shortly with a class rise.

SHELLSCRAPE almost made it the biggest day trainer Chris Waller has ever put in on a racecourse when shortly after Chris won his second AJC Doncaster Mile, Shellscrape came out, (after a tongue tie was removed) and made a mockery of his most recent form and in so doing, appeared unlucky to lose the Galaxy. Interference by a wayward Victorian on the home turn was the difference between winning and losing. Follow Shellscrape!

SINGLE PLAY is trained at Broadmeadow by Group One winning trainer Kris Lees. Although she left it late to please supporters at a recent midweek fixture, it would appear most likely that better wins await. The winning margin at Canterbury 14/4 may not have been flash but “The Pumper”, Jim Cassidy had all under control and Single Play can be well placed soon on a bigger track, preferably Royal Randwick.

AJC Archives Project

As you may be aware, the AJC is endeavouring to catalogue and archive the existing AJC library contents, which includes racing books, race results, the stud book, news clippings, media reports and magazines, as well as artwork of early horses, jockeys, trainers, breeders and owners.

As you can imagine this is a time consuming enterprise, and we are calling for volunteers from our members base to donate man hours to assist with the project.

We are also calling for donations of racing history memorabilia. Recently a gentleman donated a 1869 race book, this is a great find for the AJC Archive.

The AJC Library is used by journalists, writers, and researchers as well as students and the general public.

We are having a Volunteers Planning Meeting at the AJC on 28 April at 10.30am. Interested persons are welcome to attend that meeting, Contact the Membership Department for further information

If you wish to donate something of racing historical significance to the AJC Archive, please contact Anne Simic, on 9663 8559 or asimic@royalrandwick.com and, where possible we will include your kind contribution into our newsletter.
