Australia Day
2009 Australia Day Lunch

In 2009, the Australia Day Lunch proudly sponsored by Australia Post celebrated its 25th anniversary.

It seems that we always say “that was the best Australia Day Lunch ever” immediately after each event … but on this occasion we challenge anyone to dare say otherwise!

The Australia Day Council of NSW was determined to create a new benchmark on how we celebrate being Australian. And believe it fair to say … we delivered.

For so many of us celebrating being Australian has never been limited to just one day.

The opportunity to reflect upon our sense of self-reliance, our support for others in times of need, our quirky humour, our glorious landscape, our perspective and our national personality doesn’t just happen on 26 January – it is with us all year round.

Our diverse calendar of events enables the Australia Day Council of NSW to create programs that inspire and capture our sense of identity and culture.

No place was that more evident than through the dynamic program for the 2009 Australia Day Lunch held on Friday, 23 January – where 1,475 guests enjoyed an occasion that will be long remembered.

The Program

The program for the Lunch captured the essence of our Australia Day 2009 theme - Australian Identity and Culture.

Guests at the event were treated to an outsanding line up featuring, John Foreman as MC; Guy Noble and the Sydney Youth Orchestra, the Talent Development Project performers; Craig Ashby; David Helfgott and The Honourable Nathan Rees, Premier of NSW.

The Legends

The Legends

This year’s Australia Post Australian Legends have each made their own distinct contribution to defining our national identity and character.

Congratulations to the 2009 Australia Post Australian Legends … Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman

We were very fortunate to have three of this year’s Australian Legends attend the Lunch and were all thrilled in their candid and genuine excitement at the honour of being depicted on a postage stamp.

Australia Post commissioned a book Shining Lights: Australian Legends of the Screen, written by Michael Adams in celebration of this year’s Legends. Each guest at the Lunch received a copy of this magnificent book which included a full set of the stamps.

The Venue

The Venue

The Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre welcomed us back to their spectacular venue for the Lunch.

The planning and preparation for an event like this commences almost 6 months prior to the date. This year a truly unique menu was created for the event – for guests to experience the amazing tastes of Australia.

The dedicated and professional team at The Centre worked closely with us throughout the year and take just as much pride in the success of the event as we do.
