Members' Mail - May 2008

Dear

We would like to thank all Members and their guests who attended the Tooheys New 2008 Royal Randwick Carnival, which showcased a spectacular racing programme.

A special thanks to all of the members who turned up for Early Morning Trackwork in the most appalling weather.  We hope they spotted a winner or two.

Following is some very important information about World Youth Day, so please take the time to read it.

World Catholic Youth Day – The Truth of the Matter

In the lead up to World Catholic Youth Day there has been increasing media interest in the cost of the venture to NSW taxpayers. This club is frequently referenced as part of that commentary as to compensation. The commentary has not in all respects correctly represented the facts. Recent media articles have suggested the AJC received $42m in compensation. This is incorrect. The NSW Government committed to the racing industry a package of which the AJC received a portion.

Of the figure of $42m, $10m is a non cash contingency fund of $10m which is only accessed if for example the tracks have been damaged and need urgent repairs immediately following the WCYD event. Of the remaining $32m, $11.6m goes directly to industry parties adversely impacted by the closure of Royal Randwick. A further amount of $10m was earmarked towards the cost of building facilities at Warwick Farm to receive the horses displaced from Royal Randwick. To ensure these facilities are of a suitable standard, the AJC has expended additional funds. These facilities will provide an enduring legacy to the club as a result of our considerable contribution to the WCYD event.

The Club has received:

· $3m to mitigate the cost of suspending racing and non racing (hospitality) activities for the period of WCYD; and

· a capital contribution of $7m towards our master plan redevelopment.

Of greater importance to the club is the granting of AJC tenure at Royal Randwick for 99 years.

Wednesday 14 May

Please be advised that the Paddock Stand will be closed on this day, and the public will have access to the Ground floor of the Officials stand.

The Derby Bar will be open for members and if you are bringing guests on this day (Wednesday 14) , they will only need to pay course admission.

Parking in the middle of the course is restricted due to the world youth day compounds, and this may result in delays in exiting the car park .

We apologise for any inconvenience caused to you in this regard.
