The Tuckometer Report

The first sign that Spring racing is stirring was in evidence at the Randwick Barrier Trials held today. Heat 1 featured Group 1 performer Theseo who finished third to his promising stable mate Herculian Prince. Gai Waterhouse produced some more of her big guns when former USA galloper Cannonball won Heat 2 by 5 lengths defeating multiple Listed race winner Rabbuka with AJC Derby runner up Descarado in third placing. Other winners this morning were the Epsom bound Sainthood trained by Rick Worthington and Recoup De Fortune trained by Anthony Cummings.

Members should note that since the 2010/11 Fixture Card was printed there has been an exchange of race date with the Sydney Turf Club. The AJC will now race on Saturday 8 January 2011 whilst the STC will now race on Saturday 22 January. Members may also read media reports regarding a sink hole which appeared in the Steeple Grass track on Friday. Excavation work undertaken today has located the broken section of pipe situated under the Steeple grass track and remedial work will commence tomorrow.

Saturday's race meeting at Randwick will commence at 12.30pm with the last race at 4.40 pm. Gates will open at 11am.

Shayne Montgomery's Horses to Follow

Shayne Montgomery's Horses to Follow

ANTIGUAN is a three year old trained here at headquarters by the first Lady of Racing, Gai Waterhouse and Gai certainly sent him ready to do business at a recent midweek Warwick Farm fixture over 1600m. After racing on the speed throughout, he showed determination to draw clear in the straight before eventually scoring with authority. We can look for this horse in higher class events.

NOT A SNIP OF DOUBT was backed as if his race had already been conducted at Warwick Farm recently when he was having his second start back from a spell. The money just kept arriving for him but after looking the winner turning for home, he failed to find room to move at a vital stage. He became unbalanced in the process and suddenly the race was all but over. Look for him to avenge this luckless effort soon.

EGO hadn’t raced in Australia before and he was having his first start for Chris Waller when he was always close enough if good enough before he kicked away to what may’ve been a winning lead in a 1000m race at Warwick Farm in mid July. Not many horses are claimed late after enjoying such a healthy lead 150m from home in races over that journey but race fitness found him out late. He can atone shortly in similar class.
