From the manager’s desk |
Welcome to April, which brings with it the delightful combination of some cooler Autumn weather and the Easter school holiday season!
March was a busy month for the Tourism Wollongong team, with visits by International film crews and salesmissions and this is set to continue in April. A highlight will be our next networking function (see the story below) and I look forward to seeing everyone there on April 4.
Remember, successful tourism is a partnership, so let’s do it together.
Until next month
Greg Binskin
General Manager

Tourism Wollongong will host another networking function this month. Entitled 'Talking Tourism', the event will be held on Wednesday April 4 at the newly refurbished Comfort Inn Fairways.
It will provide a great opportunity to network and see the updated property, so be sure to be there. Anyone interested in going along should RSVP to Melissa Davis via email or call on 02 4228 0300.

Federal Tourism Minister to visit |
Federal Tourism Minister, Fran Bailey, will visit Wollongong this month in a move Tourism Wollongong believes will further etch the city on the national tourism map.
Minister Bailey will be the guest of Illawarra based Liberal Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells and will experience the Grand Pacific Drive before dining at the City Beach Function Centre.
For more information, please contact Karen from Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells' office on 02 4226 1700.

Asian television viewers will get a taste of the food and wine – along with other attractions on offer in the Illawarra region, following a visit by film crews from Beijing and South Korea last month.
The crews were in the area to capture on camera local Aussie food and wine experiences. We made the most of the opportunity to showcase Grand Pacific Drive, golf experiences, wineries, fish markets and a numbers restaurants and cafes.
April is another busy month for famils with journalists and agents coming from Singapore, Malaysia, Korea and Tourism Wollongong is also hosting the Sydney AOT Online team!

Tourism Wollongong representatives took the region as far afield as New Zealand and Hong Kong during March on behalf of Illawarra Tourism, with positive results.
Kate Dombkins focused on Grand Pacific Drive to the New Zealand market at Tourism Australia's OzTalk NZ and the Tourism NSW RTO Roadshow, while Greg Binskin looked to further develop relationships at the Tourism Australia Hong Kong Mission and sales calls to Taiwan to update on new product.
Both reported a high level of interest in their presentations.

Tourism Wollongong met with representatives from the 2008 World Youth Day, which is scheduled for 15th to 20th July 2008 (Sydney Events) and 10th – 15th July (Wollongong Events).
World Youth Day is attracting approximately half a million people into Sydney.
The Local events could attract approximately 10,000 to 20,000 students and parishes locally, nationally and from overseas.
We will update you as more news emerges.

Tourism Wollongong assist in local education |
Two tourism study classes totaling approximately 25 Illawarra TAFE students took part in an educational program on Visitor/Tourism Information Services.
Tourism Wollongong facilitated a brief program on the roles of a Visitor Information Centre and that of a Tourism Information Officer.
We hope that through this collaborative approach with teritary education providers and the tourism industry, we can assist in the better training of tourism students.
