Hello from Tourism Wollongong

From Ferraris to Fighter planes, this past month in region has been spectacular on the road and in the sky. We enjoyed the launch of a fantastic new enterprise combining the beauty of Grand Pacific Drive with the best of Italian engineering in the form of the Ferrari – now there’s a recipe for magnificence!

The Wings Over Illawarra air show once again proved to be an incredible success as people came from far and wide to see the show and enjoy the diversity and history of aircraft in the region. Crowd numbers exceeded expectations and a fantastic time was had by all.

I'm pleased to announce that Wollongong has secured the NSW Junior State Cup again for three years and  we’re looking forward to even more Touch Footy action come the Anzac Day long weekend in April with Trans Tasman Touch Football Tournament in Wollongong.

Minister for Tourism visits Grand Pacific Drive

Minister for Tourism, Ms Jodi McKay visited Jamberoo Action Park on Friday, 27 February 2009 to officially launch 2 Park Pass and the ‘We Love South Coast’ magazine.

The 2 Park Pass includes entry to Jamberoo Action Park and the Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk and includes accommodation options with; Novotel Northbeach Wollongong, Belmore All Suite Apartments Wollongong and Sebel Harbourside Kiama.

Crowd numbers soar at air show

The estimated crowd of 30,000 was exceeded at this year’s Wings Over Illawarra air show. Held at the Illawarra Regional Airport at Albion Park, the air show held a notable military presence with the awesome Roulettes display team, a Hawk fighter jet and a C-130 Hercules.

The only working Super Constellation aircraft “Connie” was a big hit, commanding a huge line of people keen to walk through and experience this exciting piece of aviation history.

Local groups, car and bike clubs from afar attended the event, contributing to the exciting atmosphere. Every year the Wings Over Illawarra goes above and beyond with volunteer and community enthusiasm pushing this popular event to a new level.

Touch Football calls Wollongong home…

Tourism Wollongong is thrilled to announce the return of the NSW Junior State Cup for 2010 to 2012 after a successful bid.

The win was based on the perseverance shown by Wollongong City Council, Tourism Wollongong and Wollongong Touch Association who were very excited to welcome the 6,000 competitors, officials and families to the city of Wollongong.

In keeping with the regions commitment to sport, the Trans Tasman Touch Tournament will be held on the Anzac Day long weekend (24 – 26 April 2009) and will welcome approximately 500 competitors and supporters to Wollongong.

World’s best known sports car takes on GPD

Grand Pacific Drive and the now famous Sea Cliff Bridge have become such a hit with driving enthusiasts and none more than Sydney’s Prancing Horse Car Rentals. The launch of the Ferrari Drive Days kicked off with a major media event on the roads of Grand Pacific Drive in early February, meandering along the coast, visiting Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk,  Coolangatta Estate Winery and staying at Bellachara Boutique Hotel before heading back to Sydney.

Following the success of this adventure, Director Walter Szyszka has now begun offering Ferrari drive days from Sydney to the South Coast. Passing through the spectacular Royal National Park and along Grand Pacific Drive, this tour gives drivers a chance to take in the magnificent bridge and pretty coastal villages along the way.

The goal in the future is to begin introducing overnight stays in the region to take in more of the wonderful sights and attractions on offer.
