From the manager’s desk

It’s hard to believe we’re just less than two months from Christmas! The team are busy in the lead-up to the summer holiday season and we are delighted at the ever increasing interest in our region, from both domestic and international markets. November 20 will see Tourism Wollongong’s Annual General Meeting and I hope to see you there.

One of the highlights of the month was the official opening on October 8 of the $3.6 million Taipan ride at Jamberoo Action Park by NSW Tourism Minister Matt Brown. The water ride named for Australian’s most feared snake – has taken the park into a new league and cemented its place as one of the country’s premier fun parks. Congratulations to Jim Eddy and his team.

The Property Council of Australia - Illawarra Chapter are hosting a luncheon on Monday 19 November at City Beach Function Centre, the focus being on Illawarra Tourism Investment and how this will impact the region. Guest speakers are The Hon Matt Brown, Minister for Tourism and Member for Kiama and Jim Eddy, Chairman of Tourism Wollongong. For more information click here.

I look forward to seeing you all at the AGM on November 20.

Until next month,
Greg Binskin
General Manager

All roads led to the Gong on Sunday

Around 11,000 cyclists converged on Wollongong yesterday, when they took part in the 2007 Sydney to Gong MS Bike Ride. The 90km, one-day ride provided riders of all ages and ability levels with the opportunity to take in the picturesque cliffs and ocean views on Grand Pacific Drive. Both rides finished at Stuart Park, where there was live music and stalls to keep supporters entertained throughout the day.

This was a great opportunity of showcasing Grand Pacific Drive and Wollongong. For more information visit website.

Grand Pacific Drive moved further along its promotional road late last month when it was highlighted during our visit to the Canberra Times Spring Home and Leisure Show. We were one of more than 330 exhibitors at the event, with Grand Pacific Drive being a stand-out success.

Destination training and new product knowledge was the aim of a recent famil for 19 VIP Viva Air Macau representatives, with the expected outcome improved sales performances from overseas destination partners. Meanwhile Singapore and Malaysian agents experienced Grand Pacific Drive as a return option back to Sydney from Canberra.

The feedback that we have received from these agents has been extremely encouraging and indicate that we are offering experiences that the markets are seeking.
