Turnpoint Randwick Guineas Day |
|
Racing returns to Royal Randwick this Saturday with all 8 races carrying "Black Type" status. The programme is headed by the Group 1 Turnpoint Royal Randwick Guineas which has 22 nominations including the Hobartville Stakes winner Monton, Royal Sovereign Stakes winner Shoot Out, VRC Derby Placegetter Viking Legend, Sandown Guineas winner Kidnapped and AJC Derby aspirants Spacecraft and Hanks from the stables of Danny O'Brien and Peter Moody respectively. The Sweet Embrace Stakes for Two Year Old Fillies and Skyline Stakes for Two Year Old Colts & Geldings will also hold plenty of interest with Victorian visitor Crystal Lily clashing with Ambers Waltz in the Sweet Embrace and Beneteau and Hinchinbrook clashing in the Skyline Stakes.
The other feature events at the meeting are the Group 2 Challenge Stakes, Group 3 Randwick City Stakes, and 3 Listed races the Strada Stakes, Wenona Girl Handicap and Aspiration Quality.
The term Lightning Strikes twice was never more appropriate than last Saturday. Wanted won the Kindergarten Stakes in Sydney at the corresponding race meeting in 2009 and duly saluted in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington 12 months later only moments before a violent electrical storm hit Flemington forcing the abandonment of the race meeting.
You may use your birthday tickets to bring friends to the races, or you may pre- purchase tickets at $20 for course entry . Member Stand tickets are available on the day or through the Membership Department until 5 pm Friday 12 March.

Shayne Montgomery's Horses to Follow

SERENISSIMA was left well behind by the eventual winner Dorf Command at Warwick Farm last Saturday once the pressure was applied but she shouldn’t be judged on this effort alone when next produced. This Peter Snowden trained filly didn’t appreciate the soft ground on the day and we can expect her to make significant improvement once the tracks firm up.
DANLEIGH looked to be a prime candidate for the undesirable tag of “best of good things beaten on the day” as he made up good ground late with the bird well and truly flown at Warwick Farm last Saturday. Admittedly his racing style of settling well back in a field leaves him open to bad luck stories but look for him in the meetings ahead because there is at least one more very good race with his name on it at the moment.
SOLAR CHARGED needs no introduction but any current “horses to follow” list would remain incomplete if her name didn’t appear in it. Her barrier trials both before and since her spell were excellent. She made her opposition look third rate at her only race day appearance before her spell and she was just as dominant at Warwick Farm last Saturday despite running about a touch under pressure when she had no rail to guide her.
