Treasure of the Month
 George Raper (1769-1796)
Waratah (Telopea speciosissima) c.1788
While serving as a midshipman aboard HMS Sirius, George Raper, a talented draftsman, observed and depicted the captivating beauty of Australian plants and birds.
Now in the Library's collection, the 56 paintings, produced in Sydney between 1788 and 1789, were rediscovered in 2004. Having lain undisturbed for years, the paintings are remarkably vivid and are Raper's enduring legacy.
In 2010, the National Library will begin construction on the state-of-the-art Treasures Gallery. If you would like to make a donation to the Treasures Gallery, please contact the Development Office on 02 6262 1141 or development@nla.gov.au.
