From the Manager's desk

Hello and warm seasonal welcome.
October is shaping up to be a very busy month with many events on the calendar. Viva la Gong kicks off on 9 October celebrating our arts and cultural diversity whilst our local participants can be seen pedalling along the scenic cycleways training for the MS Sydney to Gong Bike Ride.

We are always looking to enhance the region and recently NRMA used the Sea Cliff Bridge along the Grand Pacific Drive to shoot images for their new NRMA Member Card 2008. With distribution state wide, thousands of people now carry ‘our bridge’ in their wallets.

Thanks to all the Tourism Wollongong members who have renewed their membership and a reminder to others to get their renewals in; if we work collectively we can expand our marketing efforts to bring in the results.

And don’t forget to change your clocks when daylight saving commences on Sunday 5 October 2008.

Until next month
Greg Binskin
General Manager

UOW in partnership with Adam Gilchrist

UOW in partnership with Adam Gilchrist

The University of Wollongong (UOW) and one of Australia's greatest ever wicketkeepers Adam Gilchrist have joined forces in India recently, demonstrating the values and benefits of investing and studying at UOW. To celebrate this partnership, Adam Gilchrist and UOW hosted a series of functions across India and Tourism Wollongong was invited to showcase the destination as the perfect place to live, invest and be educated.

The campaign coincided with the Tourism NSW and Tourism Australia's Missions in Mumbai, New Delhi and Chennai, leveraging key experiences such as Grand Pacific Drive and the Bradman Museum of Cricket.

The region will also feature heavily in the 'Bollywood' style, all singing and dancing production of “Virsa” after the cast and crew spent a week filming some of the most dramatic landscapes in NSW, including our very own Bald Hill and Stanwell Tops.

Viva la Gong takes flight!

Viva la Gong takes flight!

Viva la Gong is back, bigger and better than ever! This year's theme is 'The Spirit of Flight' representing the regions' link to early aviation history.

A remarkable celebration of diversity, art, culture and wonder, Viva la Gong is a festival of local and renowned international and national artists, dancers, performers, singers, poets and authors.

From 9-12 October, there is plenty for kids with free outdoor performances, crafts and the late night festival. The new central hub for Viva la Gong in MacCabe Park and for a full overview of exhibitions, performances, markets, street theatre and comedy visit www.vivalagongfestival.org

Wollongong goes pink for a cause!

Wollongong goes pink for a cause!

October is internationally recognised as 'Breast Cancer Month' and the Wollongong community supported the cause by making our most iconic town features pink!

Launching the National Breast Cancer Foundation's 'Global Illumination', Sarongs in the Gong was a community event held on Friday 26 September of bbq's, fireworks and kids activities and most importantly, the lighting of Flagstaff Lighthouse into a transformed pink wonder!

Wollongong is one of thirteen Australian cities contributing to the Global Illumination event with the two lighthouses, the Science Centre and Planetarium as well as the Novotel Wollongong Northbeach turning a shade of pink for the cause.

Raise funds and bike to the Gong…

Raise funds and bike to the Gong…

It’s an institution! Now in its 27th year it’s time to climb aboard that bike and register for the 2008 MS Sydney to the Gong Bike Ride. This fantastic one day cycling event will be held on 2 November, and you can register online at www.gongride.org.au. Help MS Australia reach their goal of raising $1,700,000 for people with MS. There are two course lengths, 56 or 90 kms and you can register as a team or an individual.

Cycling not your thing? You can still be a part of the action by volunteering!  Or why not support a local team.
