AJC Racecourses and Equine Influenza
Over the past few months members may have been wondering what the track and garden staff have been spending their time on at the racecourses.
Throughout the EI interval Peter Peacock and his garden team have been busily tending to the floral displays that compliment the function centre. This area was not in the quarantine zone and the gardens are an important way of welcoming people to Royal Randwick.
Out on the tracks we have brought forward our spring turf renovations. At Randwick we have thinned out, aerated and topdressed the Course Proper and Kensington Tracks. They are both in superb condition and ready to race on. Over the first week in November we will also be topdressing the Steeple Track and integrating 400 cubic metres of organic matter into the dirt training track. This is an annual occurrence that helps with moisture retention and surface compaction and has been brought forward with the onset of EI.
At Warwick Farm we have been lifting the sprinkler heads on the inside of the Course Proper and topdressing the inside three metres of turf. Over the past decade this part of the track has been neglected and not used for racing. On completion of this project we will have an extra three metres of track on the inside, which adds another race run.
With quarantine at Royal Randwick now over and Warwick Farm likely to follow within a month we are readying ourselves to get back into racing. Saturday, 1 December the is going to be a great day and with further meetings throughout Christmas and the New Year we look forward to seeing you at the races.
