The Future of Compentencies
At a recent Skills Australia conference one of the more loaded questions put to the board was, “When are we going do get rid of Competency-Based Training (CBT)?”
The loading behind the question was, of course, about the sometimes crippling, tortuous bureaucratic structures that CBT demands. The downside of these processes are that they tend to slow development and implementation of needed training, increase development costs and can make the whole process so daunting that a potentially useful initiative never gets off the ground.
Another challenge for the CBT model is the difficulty of defining and measuring Attitudinal Competencies. Most competencies focus on the more tangible learning domains of Knowledge and Skills and tend to neglect the Affective/Attitudinal for Domain. The problem is, of course, that learning doesn’t transfer into sustained behavioural change without the required Attitudes.
This becomes very clear when we consider outstanding teaching or outstanding learners or even outstanding sustained application of learning to outstanding performance in the workplace. It is almost always more about Attitudes than it is about Knowledge and Skills.
The reply to this question from the Skills Australia was that there was no plan the get rid of CBT because its’ rigour underpins a systematic approach that is potentially outstanding in its’ clarity, manageability and measurability. This is a strong argument that holds up well when the system functions smoothly.
So the magic act is to somehow balance bureaucracy and systems with quick response and in-time implementation. This is a tough enough assignment by itself and when we add the challenges of ensuring we write Attitudinal Competencies that inspire learners and transform them into champion performers, it starts to look like a major stretch for the average Learning and Development professional.
Then our question might become, “If not the CBT system, then what?” Is it possible to take some of the best elements of CBT and create a more flexible, less restrictive system? The answer is probably yes, but whether anyone in a position of power will grasp the nettle and create it looks doubtful at the moment. Hope springs eternal. Optimism and Hardiness: Two sides of the motivation coin
The word motivation derives from the Latin motivus, a form of movere, which means to "to move." The difference between being motivate dna unmotivated, then, is whether or not he subject in question is moving. A classic example of aun unmotivated person is the co-called couch potato, who sits or lies unmoving while watching seemingly endles hurs of television. the remove-control is the only thing that moves !
