Forgotten Australians

Forgotten Australians

On Monday 16 November, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd made a formal apology to the 'Forgotten Australians'.

Over half a million Australian children experienced care in an institution or another form of out-of-home care in the 20th century, including those who came to Australia as 'child migrants'.

To acknowledge and remember the experiences of these children, the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs has asked the National Library to conduct a three-year oral history project.

You can follow the Forgotten Australians History project here.

Early Sydney Morning Herald Editions Online

Early Sydney Morning Herald Editions Online

The National Library's Australian Newspapers service has recently made available early editions of The Sydney Morning Herald.

The digitisation of The Sydney Morning Herald was made possible by a $1 million contribution from the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation. Eventually, all out-of-copyright editions of the Herald will be available, from its inception in 1831 to 1954.

It is now just over a year since Australian Newspapers was released to the public and there are 8.5 million articles available from 33 newspaper titles. A community of volunteer 'text correctors' has now corrected 7 million lines of the electronically translated text in 318 000 articles, enabling more accurate search results.

Search, browse and 'text correct' early editions of The Sydney Morning Herald on Trove.

Race to the Gold Diggings of Australia

The discovery of gold in 1851 drew large numbers of people to Australia. Created in c.1855, this board game takes players on an 80-day voyage from Plymouth, England to the gold diggings of Australia.

The board game represents Australia as a land of opportunity and fortune. Success on the goldfields is the reward for landing on lucky destinations, catching trade winds and avoiding shipwrecks. The first player to arrive in Australia wins the game.

In 2010, the National Library will begin construction on the state-of-the-art Treasures Gallery. If you would like to make a donation to the Treasures Gallery, please contact the Development Office on 02 6262 1141 or development@nla.gov.au.
