From the Manager's desk..

There is a busy month ahead as we prepare to open the doors of the new Southern Gateway Centre at Bulli Tops and launch a new interactive website.

It was great to see a  variety of Operators at the recent Tourism Development Workshop, hosted by DSRD and presented by Todd Wright of Threesides Marketing/Online/Training. These professional development workshops are essential for the future development of tourism in Wollongong and we look forward to hosting more events.

Remember to get your entries in for the South Coast Tourism Awards before June 19. We are looking forward to seeing more Operators entering their businesses this year. The Awards evening will be held at Novotel Wollongong Northbeach on August 12, so make sure you get cracking!

Until next month
Greg Binskin
General Manager

2009 Tourism Awards now open!

2009 Tourism Awards now open!

South Coast Tourism Awards
The South Coast Regional Tourism Organisation Inc is pleased to announce that the 2009 South Coast Tourism Awards are now open! The submission deadline has been extended and submissions now close 5:00pm on Friday June 19, 2009.

The South Coast Tourism Awards recognise and celebrate the diverse range of tourism products on the NSW South Coast. We encourage all operators to enter these awards in order to acknowledge your contribution to the regions' growing tourism industry.

This year, the South Coast Tourism Awards will “mirror” the State Awards in their entirety, i.e. the South Coast Awards will have the same categories, same criteria and the same judging system. So don’t delay, get your entries in soon!

Further information contact Vera Cvetkoski.

NSW Tourism Awards
The 2009 NSW Tourism Awards are now open for nominations and we welcome and encourage all NSW Tourism operators to enter.

The Call for Entries booklet containing all the rules and category criteria and questions is now available. Closing date for nominations and entry fees is Friday July 17 and closing date for submissions is Tuesday September 1, 2009.

For further information refer to NSW Tourism Industry Councils website.

Human swine flu update

NSW Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant, said NSW Health continued to remain on high alert, including hospitals, laboratories and public health authorities, in the management of H1N1 09 influenza (human swine influenza).

"As we are now in the CONTAIN phase of the influenza response we are taking public health measures to prevent spread of human swine influenza where outbreaks are suspected," Dr Chant said.

“We encourage people to protect themselves from the usual seasonal influenza by getting vaccinated, covering their mouths and noses when coughing and sneezing, and washing hands regularly. If you are sick, then you should be staying at home and avoid going to work or school," Dr Chant said.

Further information is available from the Swine Flu hotline on 180 2007 or at the NSW Health website.

Agents and Media getting FAMILiar with region

Agents and Media getting FAMILiar with region

Tourism Wollongong would like to take the opportunity to thank all our Operators who continually support the famil visits we bring through the region. These famils are a vital part of showcasing what the region has to offer and by getting the word out about what an incredible tourist destination we have here in Wollongong.

The past month we have had many famil groups, with Agents and Media from Germany, Thailand, Hong Kong, India and Singapore. For all those Operators involved in making these famils a success, we thank you.
