AJC Archive Project
The response to our call for volunteers for the Australian Jockey Club Archive Project was overwhelming.
We were thrilled by the number of members who attended the inaugural volunteer project meeting held at the AJC on the 28th April.
It was unanimously agreed that the AJC has a responsibility to preserve and present it’s wonderful and colourful racing heritage. More importantly this project is significant not only for the history of horse racing in Australia, but a vital historical record of Australian culture.
It was agreed that the initial, most effective approach, would be two pronged:
Firstly, appoint Ambassadors who will volunteer their time to promote the project, source donations such as silks, badges, trophies, photos, paintings, newspaper articles, books, saddle rugs, race books, betting slips etc, and assist with recruitment of volunteers to help with the man hours required; and
secondly, marshalling those volunteers for the important tasks of physical collection, sorting, cataloguing and recording of all materials.
One of our greatest untapped resources is the great racing stories which you, our members, hold dear. We hope to record for posterity and future generations, all of your great personal racing stories and your first hand record of racing history.
The core group who attended the inaugural meeting will be meeting again this week to assess the work to be done. If you would like to participate in this exciting project or if you would like to contribute something of historical significance to the Archive, please contact Anne Simic on 9663 8559 or email asimic@royalrandwick.com
Or if you have a suggestion for the Oral History Project, contact Julia Ritchie on 0407 234 933 or email julesritchie@ozemail.com.au
What this space for exciting updates in the future.

Tuckometer Report
Racing returns to Royal Randwick this Saturday with the Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation Raceday. The Flying Handicap is the feature race on the programme and has brought together a quality field of nominations including Ego's Dare winner of the Listed Hall Mark Stakes on the final day of the Autumn Carnival, Border Rebel, Pinwheel and Love Conquers All who is resuming following his third placing in the Magic Millions 3YOld Trophy in January.
A number of those horses will be on trial for a trip to Queensland as will other runners on the day. The Three Year Old Benchmark 75 over 2000 metres will also feature some horses who may be contenders in the Queensland Derby. Warwick Farm trainer Paul Cave has Our Billy Blue, who is by Sire of the moment High Chaparral in the race whilst other nominations of interest include Kings Deep and The Terminator both trained by Roger James in New Zealand and Lady Pachira from the Tony Noonan yard.
AJC based trainers are already beginning to make their mark at the Queensland Carnival and congratulations must go to Warwick Farm trainer David Pfieffer and his owners. Their filly Graceful Anna continued her good record by winning the Silk Stocking last Saturday. A number of AJC domiciled trainers have entries in the Group 1 BTC Cup this Saturday at Doomben and we wish them all the best.
Finally the club would like to thank all the Owners and Trainers who supported the AJC Autumn Carnival it was greatly appreciated and we now look forward to the Spring.

Shayne Montgomery's Horses to Follow

STAND TO GAIN was one of the Chris Waller trained horses who didn’t win at Rosehill on 8th May. Don’t hold that against either the trainer or the horse however as the 4YO imported horse was stopped in his tracks well into the straight and his beaten margin should be totally disregarded when his prospects are next assessed.
SUMMER DASH became the third leg of the Chris Waller “hat trick” when the leading Rosehill trainer won the first three races conducted at Rosehill 8th May. The best part of the Summer Dash win was how he quickly turned defeat into victory when he finally found room to move. After enjoying the run of the race, he was shuffled back to almost last as others improved around him before the home turn. Not many win under such circumstances.
SHANNARA started at very short odds in her benchmark race against her own sex at Rosehill 8th May but in reality, any price became a good price when the race was only half completed. She always travelled in the box seat in transit and it was only a matter of “time and margins” once she turned for home within striking distance of the leader. Expect her to contest better races in the time ahead and be very hard to beat despite a class rise.
