From the manager's desk

The APEC 'Bonus Long weekend' kicked off a busy few weeks for the region, followed by the 11th national SEGRA (Sustainable Economic Growth for Regional Australia) conference at the Novotel Northbeach with over 350 people.

The 9th annual Illawarra Tourism Awards were held on 21 September at the WIN Entertainment Centre, another highlight being the Tourism Australia India Mission where Grand Pacific Drive received a great response from the incentive and leisure markets. We look forward to working with this new emerging market in the near future.

This month, our calendar is jam-packed with famils, trade events and consumer shows. Let’s continue to work together to keep the momentum going.

Until next month,
Greg Binskin
General Manager

Jamberoo launches the Taipan

Jamberoo launches the Taipan

Jamberoo Action Park has opened its biggest water thrill ride yet - The Taipan. Launched on September 29, with the official opening on October 8, the Taipan is a giant waterslide where up to five people are propelled at a time in a clover raft down one of two giant waterslides - all in darkness. The drops, twists and turns along the 100 metre slide make for heart-stopping thrills. The Taipan is part of the company’s master plan to solidify its national profile as a specialist water park and leisure destination of choice. Don't forget there are other options for all of the family to enjoy.

It is encouraging to see local tourism operators reinvesting in the development of their products to capitalise on the marketing initiative of the Grand Pacific Drive.

Congratulations to all winners

Congratulations to all winners

Congratulations to all of the winners of the 2007 Illawarra Tourism Awards, which were presented at the gala evening at the WIN Entertainment Centre on September 21 in front of over 300 tourism industry colleagues.

The event was attended by NSW Minister for Tourism, Matt Brown, who congratulated the industry on their efforts to grow tourism in the state and more recently the success of the APEC long weekend.

We were delighted to win three awards, the Marketing and Promotion Award for Grand Pacific Drive for the second consecutive year. Melissa Davis won the Young Achiever in Tourism award for her contribution to the tourism industry thus far, also at the same event, Greg Binskin won the Robert East Award for Outstanding Contribution to Illawarra Tourism by an Individual.

Thanks to all of the awards sponsors - including the major sponsor IMB Business Banking, the presentation would not have gone ahead without their support.

China and Hong Kong get familiar with region

China and Hong Kong get familiar with region

The South Coast are looking forward to strengthening our message into new Asia markets following famils for self drive Southern China Airlines VIP Agents and Hong Kong media in September. The VIP Agents participating in the Southern China famil are all veteran agents of the Australian market, from Southern China & Beijing. The famil marked the launch of China's first airline initiated self drive packages.

Next on the calendar is a Grand Pacific Drive industry famil set down for Wednesday October 17, which will provide operators networking opportunities and to familiarise themselves with the region’s products. For more information, contact Kate Chapman on 4228 0300.

Grand Pacific Drive a hit

Grand Pacific Drive a hit

Grand Pacific Drive proved a hit at the Penrith Caravan and Camping Show last month, with a positive response from attendees. Awareness of our popular coastal drive is increasing in the caravan and camping market and we are keen to continue our work in this area.

Grand Pacific Drive will receive further exposure at The Canberra Times Spring Home and Leisure Show - Caravans, 4WD and Camping on October 19-21.
