From the manager's desk.. |
With Grand Pacific Drive continuing to build momentum, we’re looking forward to an influx of visitors to the area during the upcoming school holidays, ready to see for themselves what all the fuss is about!
In March we saw the much anticipated opening of the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk. The first visitors were delighted with this exciting new eco-tourism attraction, taking in breathtaking views from the Illawarra Escarpment.
I look forward to seeing you at the ‘Talking Tourism’ networking function on April 9 and also for a bumper School holiday period.
Until next month,
Greg Binskin
General Manager

Illawarra Fly Journalist Famil |
In the lead up to the opening of the Illawarra Fly, Tourism Wollongong hosted a group of Sydney and Canberra journalists on a ‘hard hat’ preview. Their clear enthusiasm for the Illawarra’s newest attraction was a sign of more to come, with the public showing similar enthusiasm with over 1,000 people visiting on the opening weekend of March 15-16 2008.
Located on the Illawarra Escarpment, the Treetop Walk offers a 500-metre elevated steel walkway at canopy level. The spiralling 45-metre high Knights Tower is already earning a reputation as a “stairway to Heaven”. At 700 metres above sea level the vista stretches from the Royal National Park in the north, to Bass Point near Shellharbour, taking in sweeping views of the valley and ocean.
As well as previewing the wonderful Treetop Walk, the journalists were also treated to Harley Davidson rides along Grand Pacific Drive getting in and amongst the views they’d just taken in from above! A magical way to tour and sample some of the fine local products on offer.
Tourism Wollongong will work closely with the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk under the Grand Pacific Drive strategic plan.

School holiday activities |
Caravan & Camping Supershow showcases the region |
The South Coast is set to make a big impact at the upcoming NSW Caravan, Camping 4WD and Holiday Supershow in Sydney from 29 March to 6 April.
We were very well received last year and are looking forward to further increasing awareness of Grand Pacific Drive in the caravan and camping market.
On the home front, the Grand Pacific Drive flag was flying high and proud at the Illawarra Caravan and Camping Show from 7 to 9 March.
|
On the subject of Grand Pacific Drive, the coastal drive will be represented at Tourism Australia’s OzTalk New Zealand as well as Tourism New South Wales’ RTO Roadshow later this month.
Where better to showcase this spectacular 140 km’s of incredible scenery and coastline? Another great opportunity to build more awareness of our exceptional scenic drive in the New Zealand market!
