Colin Tuck's Racing Review

Saturday racing returns to Royal Randwick this week for the first time since the Sydney Cup meeting on 23 April.

The Course Proper has recovered well and the rail will be in the true position for the meeting which has attracted 154 Nominations.

The next feature race to be held by the Club will be the Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on Saturday 3 June.

Racing NSW have also announced that Acceptances for Saturday race meetings will continue to be declared on a Wednesday following a trial period, so Members can access the field from 10.30 am on www.royalrandwick.com or www.racingnsw.com.au

Shayne Montgomery - Horses to Follow

Shayne Montgomery - Horses to Follow

BARSINOLA was the victim of two pieces of misfortune when he was attempting to make it two wins from as many appearances when he raced at Rosehill Gardens for the first time on Saturday 21/5. Firstly, the Grahame Begg trained three year old drew the widest gate in his race which left him settling down much further from the lead than would’ve been the case had he drawn closer to the rail. Secondly, he struck the same race that had been mapped out for the very talented Miss Marx to resume in. Look for Barsinola in similar class shortly.

MISS MARX had left no doubt via a most pleasing lead up barrier trial that she would be ready to fire when produced first up at Rosehill Gardens last Saturday. Punters were happy to accept $4.00 about her prospects before weight of money forced her odds even shorter despite solid support for a Chris Waller trainer home track race fitter gelding (Coup Ay Tee). Miss Marx was given no peace whatsoever in transit, racing almost in the joint lead on the inside rail before she kept producing enough in the straight to prevail. Better races await.

SINGLE is a so far very lightly raced three year old who had been disadvantaged by a moderate tempo set up front when beaten at Newcastle in early May. He did however look the part when next produced at Rosehill Gardens last Saturday over 1500m when he kept making ground from well back before edging clear late. He does look to be a horse to follow as his distances extend and he appeals as an ideal type to enjoy the open spaces of Royal Randwick whenever he makes his home track debut.

Darwin Turf Club

The Darwin Turf Club is pleased to offer reciprocal privileges to ATC Members during the 2011 Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival.

Our Carnival is held between 2 July and 1 August 2011 at a time when our southern counterparts deal with the wintery conditions of their home states. The Top End provides such an inviting contrast with it's cool breezes whilst being bathed in the sunshine that only Darwin can offer at this time of year.

ATC Members are invited  to complete the reciprocal member ticket application form and return it directly to the Darwin Turf Club in order to receive the reciprocal privileges on offer. It can be completed and returned via email.

Interstate Reciprocal Members must pay racecourse admission and will receive two (2) complimentary access passes to the member facilities for the day. Photo ID and a current member badge must be presented at the Administration Office PRIOR TO Race Days to collect passes.

NOTE: Due to the size of our facilities, on Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Weekend Saturday & Monday races, complimentary member passes will provide access to the Members Lawn area only.

AJC Heritage Society

AJC Heritage Society

Following is part of an email received from Scotland, if anyone reading this newsletter can shed any light on the following, we would love to hear from you.

"I was at my Mums house earlier today and whilst she was gardening she came across an Australian Jockey Club membership badge 1970-1971. Membership number is 1040.

I was just wondering how this happened to appear in her garden because we are in SW Scotland.

Would you be able to give us the persons name so we can try figure out how it may have got here."

Clarence the Clocker

Those of you who remember Clarence the Clocker (Arthur Thomas Davies1912 - 1984) will be interested to know that the family want to donate his hat, binoculars and stop watch to the AJC Racing “Museum”.  Whilst we have yet to have this Museum the Heritage Society is able to take possession of these items now.

Clarence opened his show with “Come on girls, put down your mops, up with your skirts, and ladies, have I got a winner for you!”. Imagine getting away with that these days.

NSW Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Trust

NSW Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Trust

The NSW TRT is an initiative that has been developed in concert with Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club (ATC), who have recognised and prioritised equine welfare reform. The NSW TRT demonstrates their commitment to the appropriate treatment of thoroughbred racing horses at the conclusion of their racing career. The NSW TRT has been established to support the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Programme, which seeks to train ex-racehorses into a ‘second career’, employing industry best practice to successfully re-educate thoroughbreds to a basic or preliminary dressage level or for specialised roles such as police mounts.

The NSW Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Trust is run as a not-for-profit operation and is reliant upon donations and sponsorship from both the racing industry and the general public in order to continue the successful rehabilitation of ex-racehorses.

Pictured here with Stampeder are two ATC members who, along with some others, generously donate their time on a regular basis assisting with the programme.
