Tuckometer Report

Following discussions with the Sydney Turf Club a number of changes have taken place to facilitate a better flow of races leading into the Spring Carnival. The AJC will now conduct the Group 3 Missile Stakes over 1200m on Saturday 7 August in addition to the already scheduled San Domenico Stakes for Three Year Olds. This change ensures that there will be a 1200m Weight For Age event a fortnight prior to the Warwick Stakes 1400m. The distance of The Shorts on Saturday 2 October will also be increased to 1200m. The STC have also made a number of minor changes to the feature sprint races conducted at Rosehill during Spring.

Whilst there is justifiably great interest in the Sydney Jockeys Premiership the Athol Mulley Trophy for 2009/10 is also going down to the wire. The trophy is awarded to the Apprentice Jockey who rides the most winners at Randwick only during the season and with 3 race meetings to go Tommy Berry on 17 wins is currently leading Brenton Avdulla on 12 wins.

The race meeting at Randiwck this Saturday will commence at 12.25pm with the final race at 4.35pm. Gates will open at 11 am.

Shayne Montgomery's Horses to Follow

Shayne Montgomery's Horses to Follow

RAIN MELODY   This well bred filly was resuming from her spell at a recent midweek fixture over only 1100m when she kept her unbeaten status intact after only two race day appearances. She makes her own luck in transit, she has the natural early pace to race in or near the lead. Expect her trainer, Chris Waller to find another suitable race for her shortly.

BEG  Followers of this amusingly named two year old filly are unlikely to be doing any “begging” after she finished a recent midweek race off strongly to score over 1250m. The Peter Snowden trained youngster had only raced once previously, in the black type Talindert Stakes at Flemington last January before the stable put her away and she looks to be the ideal type to improve as a very late two year old, early three year old.

WARPATH is locally trained here at Headquarters and she gives every impression that she will make a name for herself as a staying type as her career unfolds. She has progressed so far from a Country Maiden win first up in late April to be winning over 1900m in town at a recent midweek fixture at her first attempt beyond 1600m. Look for this Reset filly to go on and win better races sooner rather than later.

The AJC Heritage Society

The AJC Heritage Society

The AJC Heritage Society held their first “Quarterly Meeting” last Wednesday 30th June.

Board members Jim Mathers and Julia Ritchie were delighted with the swelling number of volunteers, and the enthusiasm they bring to the project.

On the agenda was the need for a dedicated work space for the volunteers to work in, and it seems the old Stewards office, adjacent to the Admin building will be renovated and become the official AJC Heritage Society work offices. This will allow us to call for more volunteers, and provide an adequate comfortable work environment for the detailed work involved.

Following on from the success of the 150 years of racing at Randwick display on the 29th May, the volunteers' next project is collecting display items for the 200 years of Racing in NSW to be held on Saturday the 16th October in the Tea House.

The work the volunteers do involves not only cataloguing and archiving, but a lot of research, for example the AJC hold many old unidentified photos, one in particular of a smartly dressed woman in a hat and suit came to our attention. Much discussion around the table as to who she was, with volunteer Peter Harris being sure that it was a lady named Sue Bookallil. He fondly remembered that she used to appear in the social pages in the late 50’s early 60’s and went on to become a milliner and fashion designer.

Peter found that an outfit she designed for Gail Waterhouse to wear to the races can be seen on the Powerhouse Museum website. But still we couldn’t be sure it was her.

The Gai Waterhouse connection to Sue Bookallil gave Peter the idea of ringing Gai’s office to see whether she would be willing to look at the photo to confirm or not that it was indeed Miss Bookallil, however Gai was overseas. Her office kindly emailed the image to Gai’s mobile and a few hours later Peter received an email with the simple confirmation: "Definitely".

The strength of his youthful longing or infatuation around 1960 had imprinted Sue Bookallil's image so firmly in his psyche that he could unhesitatingly identify her 50 years later despite never having seen any other image of her since.

The AJC Heritage Society are always looking for donations of memorabilia to complete this wonderful and extensive history of racing in Australia library. If you would like to contribute something of historical significance to the Archive, please contact Anne Simic on (9663 8559) or email asimic@royalrandwick.com

Vale

Many of you will remember Noelene Barker, who was an AJC member from 1985 to 2006 and her family. Her husband Tom (Spider) was a long-standing foreman for T.J. Smith and strapped Kingston Town, among others. Their son Noel was tragically killed in a barrier trial at Randwick in September 1992.

Our sympathies go to Spider and the family.
